The Customer's Challenge: Screws Not Up to the Challenge

Bicycle handlebars must undergo rigorous durability testing to ensure user safety. In this specific customer case, the initially used high-strength screws for securing the handlebars failed to pass the test breaking before meeting the industry's high durability test standards.

Trying to find the issue at hand, the customer independently analyzed the mechanical properties and materials of the screws. The results showed that the screws in question met the general specifications for high-strength fasteners. This left the customer very troubled, as they could not identify the root cause of the problem, and the existing supplier could not provide an effective solution.

Our Solution: Investigating the Issues and Eliminating Them

After observing the fracture surface, our engineers discovered obvious fatigue failure marks and confirmed that the screws broke after undergoing a period of dynamic testing, rather than breaking immediately after being secured. Therefore, we determined that the problem was likely due to insufficient fatigue strength of the screws. With our years of experience in fastener applications, our engineers proposed several improvement measures, including

  • enhancing fatigue strength
  • reducing stress concentration effects
  • increasing anti-loosening effects, and
  • streamlining the assembly process.

To verify the performance of the newly designed screws for the application at hand, we specially commissioned the industry-recognized measurement laboratory SGS to conduct dynamic testing. The results proved that our ecosyn® grip screws could pass the stringent BS EN 14766 standard dynamic test, completely resolving the customer's challenge.
